Binge-Worthy: Romantic Comedies

20 December 2018

I remembered her. I remembered everything.
But was it a blessing or a curse?
Half of me was still in love with the blue eyed girl wearing my crown around her neck. The other, felt betrayed that she could walk away when I needed her the most.
Struck down by her absence, an internal war brewed within my kingdom. Along with my childhood memories a new emotion was unleashed, one I was unable to control.
Rage
Unbridled, unrelenting, rage.

I was hooked by the first chapter of the first book., so when book two came out, I couldn't get my hands on it fast enough. This book concludes the story, and explains that cliffhanger in end of book one. I love cliffhangers, because it makes me excited to read the next book. I was no disappointed. The angst and suspense continues, and stacks on top of new obstacles these amazing characters have to face. I felt everything these characters felt, and wasn't able to put this book down until the very last page. This was an amazing duet. I would highly recommend this story, and I look forward to reading more stories by this author.

The Official Recipe for Nathan Benson:
2 cups cockiness
1 mouth that's far sexier when it's shut
1 huge ego that can't fit in the damn mixer
1 BIG, HARD co--Well, you get the picture...
As a pastry chef, I can tell exactly what a man is made of the moment he walks through my shop's frosted glass doors.
So, the moment Nathan Benson showed up over half an hour late to our blind date (with no explanation), caught the gaze of every woman in the diner with his panty-melting smile, and said, "I personally don't think we should waste any more of our time sitting here talking," after only five minutes of conversation, I knew he was one of the rudest concoctions ever created.
I also knew there was no way in hell I was going to see him again.
Or, so I thought.
Days after I abandoned him on our first date, he tracked me down with one hell of a way to get me to agree to a second one. (And a third, and a fourth.) I swear if it weren't for the fact that I was being blackmailed by the sexiest man I've ever met, I would've reported him to the authorities a long time ago.
Then again, holding out for a few late night kisses (and maybe a bit more) from his mouth of perfection may not be a complete recipe for disaster after all...

It’s really hard to save a guy’s life when he keeps running from you. You might be asking yourself why I’m waving an inflatable penis in the air and screaming at the top of my lungs. If I took time to explain, Declan Moss would get hit by a bus. Let me back up. I didn’t ask for this. I was perfectly happy—and perfectly sane—before I was tasked with keeping Declan Moss alive. It was a thankless job until the moment that my panties dropped and his delicious smirk found his way in between my thighs. Hello, toe-curling ecstasy. Goodbye, professional boundaries. And suddenly, there’s a new danger to avoid: the falling of my heart.
(3.5 stars)
This was a quirky and cute story. I liked it, but I had a hard time connecting with these characters. I listened to the audiobook version, and the narrator wasn't my cup of tea. I felt that she had  a clipped william shatner kind of voice pattern that kept me distracted from the story. I think that maybe I'd have enjoyed the story a little more if I'd read the book, instead of listening to it. This was my first book by this author, and I've seen a couple more that I've heard are absolutely amazing, so I am not done with her yet. I did like her writing style, and I laughed a couple times, which keeps me looking forward to more. This story, unfortunately wasn't right for me. My missing stars are due to the narrator choice, and the fact that I didn't connect to the story as much as I'd hoped I would. I would, however suggest this story to a couple friends of mine that I know would absolutely love it!

Every wrongdoing warrants a consequence. In my case, I've decided to settle the score with death.
Especially when, what brought this on, what stirred up my crazy, was the vicious attack on an innocent young girl.
Worse, one that ended in her death.
Years, I've been plotting to take out the men I used to call my brothers.
The men who double-crossed me by brutally murdering my sister.
I want revenge. I need it. Crave it. It's in my blood.
I planned to stop at nothing. No matter, if I conflicted pain on another woman.
After all, it was her brother who killed my sister. I figured, why not make him suffer the same way I have.
One tiny glimpse of her changes everything.
Or does it?
Maybe, just maybe, the little siren I wanted to harm is going to single-handedly slaughter me instead.
Lies. Deceit.
Manipulation.
Gotta love a tangled web of warranted deception.
He was her happily ever after, until he wasn’t.
When Mathew left, he took every dream they ever had together with him. Devastated and alone, Tabitha is forced to abandon the future she’s always dreamed of having, with the only boy she’s ever loved. She never imagined that she would have to start over at nineteen, before her life really began. As she suffers from a broken heart, Tabby must now face a brand new future completely on her own.
She was his sister’s best friend.
Brandon has been in love with Tabby for as long as he can remember. He never stood a chance before, because she’s always been in love with someone else. He’s been stuck on the sidelines for years, but that’s all about to change. She may not realize it yet, but she needs him. And he’s always needed her.
Sometimes love isn’t a choice when fate decides.

First day of preschool
“Why can’t I stay home with you?” I whine at my mom from the back seat of her car.
“Because I said so, Matty.” Mom sounds annoyed, but I don’t care. I’m not happy either. She woke me up and made me change out of my Optimus Prime pajamas to put on itchy stiff clothes and shoes that make my feet heavy.
I always get pancakes with chocolate chips for breakfast. Dad makes the best, but Mom’s are okay. I told her that, too, but she still made me eat cold cereal instead. She said we didn’t have time for pancakes, because I had to go to school. She never made me go to school before.
Mom says going to school is exciting. That I’m a big boy now. It doesn’t feel exciting, but rather like I’m being punished. Mom only tells me I’m being a big boy when she wants me to do something I don’t really want to do.
Mom pulls the car into a parking lot in front of a pink building with flowers painted all over it. I hate pink, and flowers are for girls. A big lady in a purple dress is standing outside the door. Her smile is too big for her face and her hair is short like my dad’s. Ladies aren’t supposed to have short hair. Short hair is for boys. I don’t like her. I don’t like pink buildings. I don’t like wearing heavy, clunky shoes with laces that keep coming untied and try to trip me. I want pancakes that have chocolate chips inside them. I want my Optimus Prime Pajamas. This is not exciting. This is punishment. Being a big boy sucks.
My mom opens her door and walks over to open mine. She starts to unbuckle my car seat. Big boys don’t sit in car seats. My butt still fits in my seat, which means my mom is wrong.
“Okay, Matty, it’s time to go in and meet your teacher, make new friends.” She helps me climb out of my seat, grabs my new backpack, and we walk up to the crazy purple lady with boy hair.
“Welcome! Welcome! Who do we have here?” The lady in the purple dress squats down and brings her face level with mine.
Her breath is hot on my face, and it smells bad.
I’m not staying.
I try to back away, but Mom tightens her grip on my hand and stops me from getting very far.
“This is Mathew. He’s a little nervous about his first day,” Mom lies with a laugh.
The lady laughs too, then turns her horrible breath back to me. “Hello, Mathew, my name is Mrs. Mitchy, and I think we are going to be the best of friends.”
I’d rather not do that at all.
Mom and Mrs. Mitchy talk for a really long time, then my mom leaves, and Mrs. Mitchy makes me follow her inside. The inside looks better than the outside does, but I’m still going to leave. The first chance I get, I’m making a run for it. The inside is every color, and there are toys everywhere. There are toys for both boys and girls. I was worried they were going to make me play with dolls, like my cousin Kailee always makes me do when we are at her house.
I spot some blocks in the corner, and some of the anger about my mom leaving me here evaporates. I walk over and play with the blocks. They are heavier than the blocks I have at my house, but they are bigger too. They are all the same boring color, not all the colors like mine are, but that’s okay.
“Wanna be my friend?”
A boy stands over me. I continue to play with my blocks and choose not to talk to him.
“My name is Steve. Do you like dinosaurs?” This kid is annoying.
“I like dinosaurs sometimes.”
His face splits into a grin and he sits down next to me. “Wanna play dinosaurs with me? You can be a T-rex, and I’ll be a raptor, because raptors are my favorites!”
“No.”
“Okay. Can I play blocks with you?”
“No,” I say again.
“Why not?” He frowns.
“Because I don’t want to be your friend, and I want you to go away.”
He scrunches up like he’s about to cry, but I don’t have to worry about if he’s gonna tell on me or not, because at that very moment I look up and see her.
Mrs. Mitchy is talking to a pretty lady with long brown hair in a white dress with blue flowers all over it. The pretty lady is smiling and hugging a little girl to her side. The little girl has beautiful brown hair like her mom. She’s in a fluffy pink dress, and she has matching pink bows in her hair. I guess pink isn’t so bad if she likes to wear it. She isn’t smiling like her mom. She’s hiding behind her mom’s dress. She looks like she wants to run away too.
I don’t want her to run away.
I stand up and leave the blocks and the annoying dinosaur boy. I walk up to the brown-haired girl and her mom. She sees me getting closer, because I can see her eyes pinned on me. She has pretty blue eyes. Blue is my favorite color. I walk all the way up to her, and she stops hiding behind her mom’s dress.
“Hi, my name is Mathew. What’s your name?”
She looks down and mumbles something I don’t hear. Her mom and Mrs. Mitchy stop talking and watch us.
“This is Tabitha,” her mom answers for her as she gently nudges her forward.
“Are you scared?” I ask her.
She shakes her head.
“Then why are you sad?”
“I don’t want my mommy to leave,” she whispers back but keeps her eyes cast down.
“My mom left me here too.”
She looks up. “She did?”
“Yep,” I say in my big boy voice. “Do you want to play blocks with me, Tabitha?”
She smiles and nods. I reach out and grab her hand in mine. Mrs. Mitchy and her mom are smiling down at us. Her mom’s eyes glisten with tears, but she’s smiling. Tabitha and I walk toward the blocks. Steve isn’t there anymore, and I’m glad because I don’t want to share her with anyone. I let go of her hand once we’re both sitting on the floor with the blocks
Preschool isn’t so bad now. I don’t even care my mom left, or that I had to eat cold cereal instead of pancakes. I don’t even care that Mrs. Mitchy has a boy haircut.
Because Tabitha is here, and I love Tabitha.
What do you do when the hand which held you becomes the touch you crave?
I’ve loved her for twenty years.
She’s a rare beauty luring with a dangerous high.
And I’m addicted.
I can’t get enough.
There is only one problem.
She is married to my father.
He’s an abusive asshole, destroying her down to the very root.
He won’t get another chance.
I’ll beat him to it.
And steal his precious drug—my princess—my Poppy.

“You ready to meet my people?” I ask.
“Ready as I’ll ever be,” he shrugs.
Yay, he seems really into this. Wonderful.
I grab his hand and lead him to the back room. When we enter, I notice that the table I just vacated is deep in conversation. As we walk to the table, I can’t shake the feeling of being watched. But no one at the table even notices us yet. As we approach, I hear them talking about the publishing house courting Dex about a book deal.
“Hey guys.” I get their attention. Morgan and Gia have big smiles on their faces. Dex and Simon on the other hand are assessing the newcomer.
“This is Mason,” I go around the table and introduce him. Before I’m done with introductions, Bernie pops in between the guys and introduces herself too.
“So, you’re the sports guy,” Dex says, assessing.
Mason laughs it off, “I am. You’re one of the video gamers, I take it?”
“Sure am.” Dex still doesn’t ease his slightly scrutinizing demeanor. They make small talk for a bit. The girls trying to lead the conversation away from the tension the guys are throwing out. Don’t get me wrong, I’m flattered. I suspect this is exactly how my own brother would act right now. But while they are just meeting him, Mason and I aren’t new. I’ve been dating him for a while. It’s not like I don’t know him.
Simon excuses himself to get some refills for the table and as soon as they return, Link appears at the table. He doesn’t sit though, he stands. I could swear he’s puffing out his chest.
“I’m Link. You are?” he shoves his hand out for a shake.
Mason slowly takes a drink before making eye contact with him, making Link wait as he lowers his cup to the table, and grasp his hand.
“Mason. Ruby’s boyfriend.”
Link brings his other hand around and slaps Mason’s back, “Ah. Well it’s great to finally meet ya, Mace. I’ve heard almost nothing about you!” They drop each other’s hand at the same time I hear someone beside me snort.
“It’s Mason,” he corrects.
Link just blows him off, pulls over a stool and starts talking his ear off. I mean, I guess this could have gone worse. Amber, who I didn’t notice before, sits next to Link looking bored out of her mind. Dex and Morgan excused themselves to go chat with their parents. And it seems like the rest of the table are enjoying talking to Mason.
“So, do you plan on working for ESPN or SportsCenter some day? Like, is your gig with WTSL just a stepping stone or are happy where you are?” Bernie asks. She’s adept at keeping the conversation going. She’s also got mad interviewing skills.
Mason snaps out a laugh, he looks a bit annoyed with the line of questioning. Which baffles me since he usually loves talking about himself.
“Well, I have what you call a career. A real job. So yes, I have long-term goals,” he replies.
“Excuse me?” Link and Simon say in unison.
“Well, correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t you just play video games all day?” he asks.
“Among other things, yes. But I get paid probably three times more doing what I do than you could even imagine. It’s a real fucking job,” Link bites out and damn, he sounds pissed. I’ve never heard him so angry before.
He laughs. Mason actually has the audacity to laugh right in their faces.
I gulp. I’m afraid to look at anyone but Mason right now. It’s clear that our nice, “getting to know the new boyfriend time” is over.
“Right,” he drags out the word. “Well, I guess we will just have to agree to disagree then.”
Link growls and I risk a glance his way. But, I’m not prepared for what I see. He’s not staring down Mason with fire coming out of his ears, ready to attack. No. My throat catches at the sight before me.
I’m absolutely embarrassed. You know when you’re a kid and you do something bad, and instead of your parents saying they are upset with you, they tell you they are disappointed? It makes it so much worse. That’s how I feel right now.
He’s looking at me with disappointment in his eyes. He holds my attention and I start to say something, to try and fix where this conversation just went. But I stop. He gives a quick jerk of his head. He clears his throat and pushes off of the stool.
“Well, I think that’s our cue to leave. See ya around, Mace.” Link looks to his left to where Amber is collecting her phone and purse. Somehow she still manages to look bored. He motions a quick goodbye to the entire table, avoiding my gaze entirely. Then he walks away.
You could cut the tension with a knife when Simon stands and turns on his heel. He stalks towards the table where Morgan and Dex are sitting. Gia shoots me a pleading look as she follows him. Bernie sits stock-still, worry sketched on her face.
I start to speak, but Mason beats me to it.
“Well, that went well. They all seem alright, but I’m not sure I like the cocky asshole.”

“Sometimes love happens when you least expect it.”
That was what my husband’s mistress told me the day I found out about their affair.
I didn’t believe it until five minutes later when mouth-watering celebrity chef Tanner Reese walked up, tossed his arm around my shoulders, and told my cheating husband to take a hike. Tanner and I couldn’t have been more different. He spent his weekends at clubs, rubbing elbows with fellow A-listers. I spent mine in yoga pants with cheese boards and a glass of wine—or six. Our relationship shouldn’t have worked, but it did. That is until Tanner proved to me that even though love happens when you least expect it... So does heartbreak.

This is an emotional whirlwind story with two badass characters that come together in the best of ways. Bot characters have suffered in love, so if anyone deserved their person,it was definitley these two. I LOVED this book!! I never read the Duet related to this standalone story, but now I REALLY want...not scratch that. I really NEED to read them now!! This story is multilayered, and deep. Worth all the sleep you miss out on, because you just. cannot, put. this, book, down!! A must read in my book, and absolute reread in my future. <3

I shifted the phone to my other ear and asked her, “Did you just get in bed?” “If, by bed, you mean carrying a glass of wine out back to swing in the hammock, maybe.” I bit my bottom lip, my head falling back against the headrest. For most men, this would have been an innocuous statement. But for a hammock connoisseur like myself, this was the normal guy equivalent of her saying that she liked to give blowjobs during halftime. “You have a hammock out back?” There was a delay in her response, which was followed by a subtle kiss of her lips on what I assumed was a wine glass. “Don’t knock it until you try it. It’s one of the most underrated luxuries in outdoor furniture.” “Oh, I’m not knocking anything. Rope or quilted?” “Mayan, actually.” “Oh, sweet heavenly baby Jesus, she’s beautiful and knows her hammocks. I’ve never been so turned on in my life.” She giggled, pausing for another sip. “You know, if you leaked this hammock fetish to the press, you could probably increase demand by five million percent and singlehandedly lower the country’s unemployment rate.” Okay, so at some point during the day, she’d figured out who I was. But! Even with this knowledge, she was trying to avoid a date with me and was not elbow-deep in planning our televised wedding. This was a definite plus in my book. “Yeah, but then, when I talked to beautiful women like yourself, I’d have no idea if the hammock was your idea or a ploy to impress me.” “Jeez, that’s sad, Tanner,” she said, her sweet Southern accent like a wave rolling over my name. I’d meant it as a joke, but it was the absolute truth when it came to dating. Early on in my career, I’d done a rapid-fire interview about my personal life. One of the questions had been: What would your ideal woman order on the first date? Truth be told, the only thing I hoped my ideal woman would order was something she wanted. I didn’t factor into that. But I’d been on my last question in my last interview of the last day of a month-long press tour. My face had hurt from fake smiling, I’d been in desperate need of a shower, a smoke, and sleep, and my mind had been mush, so I’d prattled off the first thing that had come to mind: shrimp and grits. That one little answer somehow made it onto my Wiki page, and after that, every woman I’d taken out ordered shrimp and grits. One of them even had a shellfish allergy and nearly ended up in the hospital. And this insanity was not limited to women outside of the spotlight. I’d once gone on a date with America’s princess of pop, Levee Williams. We’d hit it off at a charity event. For one of the most famous women in the world, she was a surprisingly nice girl, gorgeous, and funny as all get out. But the first time I took her out? One guess what she ordered. I was at the end of my rope with dating and lost my freaking mind before storming out like an asshole. That night, as I was reporting shrimp and fucking grits as an error to Wiki, I noticed that her page listed it as her favorite food. I’d never had the balls to contact her again, and I once hid behind a palm tree on Rodeo Drive when I heard the clamoring of paparazzi calling her name. But that’s neither here nor there. In short, while finding a woman was all too easy, dating was hard. But that wasn’t about to stop me from trying with Rita.
